Hello everyone and welcome to Weekly Time Waster! My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies. I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more i love it. This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world. I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie. Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think i missed. Make sure you stayed tuned as “Tales from the Northside” will be hitting the Nerditis soon.
Some interesting releases this week include:
The Possession
30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Branded
Wake in Fright

The Possession
So Sam Raimi, taking a break from Oz the great and Powerful brings us The Possession. Starring the poor man’s Javier Bardem and Mrs. Kevin Bacon the story is about a girl becoming possessed by a Jewish spirit after opening an old box. Now according to the trailer this is based on a true story and I watched the Paranormal Witness episode that talked about this and let’s just say there was artistic license taken here as i don’t remember a girl getting possessed or even being in contact with the box. The only thing that this movie has going for it is the Jewish perspective which in recent memory i haven’t seen done unless there was a Gollum involved.
30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Well. This is a real winner here! I needed to consult IMDB for this one but let’s just say that the only person of interest in here is French Stewart…so that just tells you the quality you are about to witness. Also, i have had some bad experiences with these spoof movies (Epic Movie anyone?) and i get the sense the funny parts are in the trailer, which is only a minute long. So maybe if you are desperate (or high) give it a look see but i will pass.
Branded
I’m sure the creators of this movie were trying to tell a thought provoking allegory of how advertising is rotting our brains and to “not trust big corporations” because aliens (or a genetic experiment) are living inside corporate logos only seem to invoke memories of Treehouse of Horror. Starring a no name, George Bluth Senior and Max Von Sydow who i am convinced is a wizard as he looks the same in every movie he has ever been in.
Wake in Fright
This movie has quite the history and was literally saved from being incinerated and lost forever in time (apparently). Starring Donald Pleasance, it is about an American in Australia and the drug fueled, booze fueled trip that only movies from the 70s can provide. Like Crocidile Dundee in the 80s, this is some kind of weird Aussieplotation snuff filmed. It also has the distinction of showing a real life killing of a kangaroo which today would cause PETA to burn Australia to the ground. If you love far out 70s movies then give this a try.
So go out and take a moment for yourself and enjoy some of my time wasters! See you next week.
Is it just me or does Branded look like a badly remade They Live??
