It was only a matter of time I suppose.
In an attempt to defend themselves from attempts to find funding to have a Death Star built. ( http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/461687407/kickstarter-open-source-death-star?ref=live )
Simon Kwan out of Shanghai has started this Kickstarter page to finance the creation and pilot training program of an X-Wing fighter. With 46 days to go he has successfully raised over 250 thousand dollars.
Crowdfunding Rebel Alliance X-Wing Squadron
Simon believes he can achieve to goal with a mere 11 million dollars, and has come up with some pretty impressive stretch goals to go along with this project.
the first being a full squandron of X-Wings being built, The second consist of constructing the Corellian Freighter made famous by the Rogue Han Solo and his trusty companion Chewbacca. finally the 3rd involves building the Y-Wing Bomber.
Simon Acknowledges that the “Empire” is doing one thing right this time, and that is open sourcing the Death Star Design. So he will have to find a new weakness because one can only assume they are going to cover up that damn exhaust port.
If your interested in contributing, well… may the force be with you because your wallet may be empty but your heart will be full with the knowledge that you did your part to stem the expansion of the Evil Empire!

I wonder what they will do with the money. Hey, for that sum, I might try to build an ACTUAL X-Wing. I mean, without a Shuttle to tow it into space, who can say whether it would fly or not?
(I call BS on an X-Wing being able to fly in a planetary environment, it clearly lacks any appearance of aerodynamicity. And by the way, no one cares about the Y-Wing anyway. Screw that)
Why couldn’t the x-wing “fly” in a planetary environment ? The principle of flight must be based on something other than the bernoulli effect as x-wings in the movie do not need a runway to take off or land in the normal sense. It must therefore use some other technology not yet discovered. Maybe something like a superconductor technology that works on a opposing magnetic polarities to provide lift ? Just spitballing here but it certainly cannot be based on aerodynamics.
In the starwars universe xwings could fly in atmosphere and the one thing they had over the empire is that in atmosphere they were far more maneuverable than tie fighters. Now how star wars science=real world science is another matter, but it will be interesting to find out!
