Welcome to another Weekly Time Waster! My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies. I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more I love it. This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world. I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie. Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think I missed.
I guess the big release this week would probably be Iron Man 3, which for the record have yet to see and based on reviews I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. But I have managed to find some great hidden gems for you to give a look over and I guess the theme for this week is “stop me if you’ve heard this one before”. First up we see how England handles southern stereotypes, then we see what former The OC star turned high school psychiatrist takes on in another genre piece, from there we move to an “original” story and finally we learn does dubstep lead a man to kill?
A group of social misfits and their workers get lost in the backwoods, only to be accosted by the inbred, hicks who then proceed to maim and kill each member of the group. Well what if I told you that this doesn’t take place in the Deep South but in a small town in England?! I will say that this is a refreshing change of pace to this story and expect a ton of black humour.
Mischa Barton has moved from high school psychiatrist to concerned roommate in this movie. When two girls move into an apartment, weird things start going on…like what you ask? Well anything J-Horror has done in the last 20 years. Ms. Barton gets top billing in this movie but she appears to be playing second fiddle to the other female that looks sort of like her. You know, maybe if Mischa stuck around on The OC a little longer rather than getting killed off maybe her career might have been better then playing muse to Enrique Iglesias in a couple of his videos. This is in 3D so that means it must be a great quality movie.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one…six friends head into the woods, oh you have heard this one. Well they go into the woods to drink, smoke weed and have sex, right nothing new there. Okay well they are in some woods haunted by an unseen killer; okay yes even I have to admit I know that one. And the killer begins to kill everyone off one by one in creative or imaginative ways until eventually the protagonist is left alive for a bizarre or dumb reason and leaves a door for a sequel that will never be made. For the record, I made that last part up because I have not seen this movie but I can assure you that if everything else sounds like something you have seen before well this ending is not that far-fetched.
A group of party goers are killed off one by one by a psycho who has the worst evil costume I have ever seen on a person. The guy is playing the part of a stone faced killer probably because that is the best acting you can get out of him. But what could this killer have as motive to go around killing people in an old department store (credit for a cool location)? Well in the middle of the trailer we have suspect number one when the DJ D-d-d-d-d-d-d-rops the bass with some dubstep! And if that thump-thump-wob-wob doesn’t drive you to kill well then you have hearing.
That’s all for this week folks! Take the time to look up some of the selections this week and be sure to let me know what you thought. Don’t forget to hit the comments and let me know if I missed something or if there is a movie out there you think I should check out. Make sure you check out some of my friends on Nerditis and my new column The Northern Dead and old favourite Tales from the Northside. I’ll see you next week!
