Weekly Time Waster

Hello everyone and welcome to Weekly Time Waster!  My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies.  I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more I love it.  This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world.  I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie.  Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think I missed.

This week’s time waster is what happens when you burn all your horror bridges before Valentine’s Day is no one interested in watching a slasher involving a sorority house with their loved one?!?  So I needed to really reach on some these but hopefully you’ll still join me after the break to learn more.  Releases this week include:

Alex Cross

The Ballad of Narayama

Alex Cross

I really like Kiss the Girls and to a lesser extent Along Came a Spider but when I see this movie I think “where are you Morgan Freeman?”  Tyler Perry, surprisingly not in drag, stars as Dr. Alex Cross trying to catch a roid fuelled Matthew Fox who is killing people.  This movie appears to have every cliché you can think of in a crime thriller so I would caution you before you start to watch it.  Also this movie was pretty critically panned which is not really a good sign either.

This looks like the winner of the week!  Eric “Remember when I was the Hulk” Bana and Olivia “you are in my Hall Pass with Mrs. CanadianScott” Wilde star in this wintery-pulp fueled movie as a brother and sister who after stealing a whole whack of money get into a car accident and then when the brother and sister split off to meet in Canada we get double crosses and what appears to be a snowmobile chase.  Olivia reunites with her Tron: Legacy co-star Garrett Hedlund as the kind stranger who gets tangled in the plot.  This film also features heavy hitters Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristopherson so it can’t be all that bad.

The Ballad of Narayama (Trailer is NSFW)

Now I’m not really big into the Asian cinema but this looks like something up a few people’s alleys.  The movie is based on an old Japanese story about people sending those at the age of 70 up a mountain to die (or in the case of the trailer, roll them down a hill to speed up the process).  The movie itself is probably a lot deeper then the trailer tells us but if you like your Asian cinema then this will definitely be for you.

Side by Side

As much as I love movies, I love a lot of behind the scenes stuff as well.  I find the movie making process to be a fascinating one and I love to hear all the little behind the scenes stuff that go into making a great film.  Keanu “please don’t call me Neo” Reeves is our host for this look into Shooting on Film vs Digital Filming.  He even gets together with some of the greatest and best directors in Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy like David Fincher, James Cameron, George Lucas, David Lynch and even Robert Rodriguez to get a better understanding on which format is better.  If you love the craft of filmmaking then I think this will be something to watch.

Well that’s all for a light week in movies.  Have fun wasting your week and here is to hoping some better things come out next week.
