Gearbox ”Robbed SEGA blind”

One anonymous SEGA employee has made some very startling claims about the company that developed Aliens Colonial Marines.

A recreation of the supposed events.

First off, a bit of a disclaimer: this is a difficult one. Trawling the internet sometimes comes up with gold but it’s easy to be misled, especially at times like this just after a major game release that has been mauled critically and financially. So I’m going to present the information in an as unbiased a manner as possible and let you make the decision as to if you believe me or not.

The past few weeks have been a bad time for game developers Gearbox. The makers of Borderlands and its sequel, along with the most recent Duke Nukem game and Aliens Colonial Marines have been hit with a wave of accusations over their performance producing the Colonial Marines games. Allegations are coming from not only gamers, who have accused them of deception, but also from the company they outsourced work to and several unnamed sources in the industry who have claimed Gearbox mislead their publishers and distributors as well.

And now another potential blow is coming: a blogger ‘SEGA Awakens’ who claims to be an anonymous worker for SEGA has claimed that “Gearbox robbed SEGA blind”. The blogger claims that Gearbox as a company artificially and deliberately extended development time so they could funnel money into making games they were more interested in making, namely Duke Nukem Forever and the Borderlands series. The key part in his blog post is this section:

Now here is the company that should get most of the blame: Gearbox Software and Randy Pitchford. Gearbox stole from SEGA, they robbed us, lied to us about the game, and tried to get another company to make the game instead. Let’s see where the funding went shall we? Everyone said the game went to both Borderlands games, but Duke Nukem Forever gets a mention as well, but it’s pushed out of the spotlight, because people want to forget about that game, and I don’t blame them! Duke Nukem Forever, had a big impact on Aliens: Colonial Marines (ACM) as well. Don’t believe me? Let’s read this article here.
It clearly shows that Pitchford and Gearbox wanted to focus heavily on Duke Nukem Forever, but how would they get the money to hire some of the 3D Realms team and even buy the intellectual property? Sure, they made a lot from Borderlands, but guess where they got the money to fund Borderlands in the first place? Yup, SEGA. So Gearbox essentially lied to SEGA, mishandled funds, broke agreements and contractual obligations to work on other projects, didn’t want to work on a game they were contractually obligated to work on and gave it to another team, poor organization and direction on ACM, took on too many projects from different companies at once, and other things that we may not even know about. Hell, part of me believes that Gearbox wanted this thing delayed as much as possible so they can get more funding money to embezzle from SEGA.

Regardless of the validity of these claims, it’s a rather startling one to make. The following months will be interesting to watch for sure and it could be tough times for Gearbox.
