Weekly Time Waster

Welcome to another Weekly Time Waster!  My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies.  I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more I love it.  This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world.  I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie.  Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think I missed.

Looking around at the new releases of the week, it appears there is a retro feeling for everyone.  A lot of old movies are coming back in either DVD or Blu Ray format so a few pics this week are re-releases from a different era.  Doesn’t mean they receive a free pass, if it’s bad, it will always be bad.  Plus we see how poor filing of copyright paperwork leads to a British re-imagining.

Body Melt (Trailer is NSFW)

This Australian import is about people is a small neighbourhood that are given some funky drugs which eventually cause them to melt away/turn into weird monsters.  Filled with 90s nostalgia, I love the computer generated homes and the wicked robot voice which I suppose to someone 20 years ago would be mind-blowing.  The physical effects look pretty lame by even high school production standards and looks like the characters are all apart of the horror character guide-book.  Crazy old man, young couple, sex crazed older woman, teens in heat, etc.  But if ozploitation is your thing, then give this one a view.

The Wicked

http://youtu.be/dziapSjHJE0

The Wicked stars a group of no name teen actors who go out to a cursed house and awaken the evil presence within.  Now already we see that a little girl has gone missing and probably thanks to this witch, so why someone wouldn’t go out and investigate the house?  If there was a missing girl and even if you didn’t believe it’s a witch, wouldn’t you check out the house where the crazy person lives?!?  Well never fear because this group of kids will give the witch all the trouble she can handle…well…probably not.  Again filled with some clichés we have seen in other movies, look to the sensible girl in the group and probably the nerdy kid to survive.  Also, expect to see me covering Wicked 2 in about 6-8 months.

Night of the Scarecrow

This movie lost me at just the first 10 seconds of the trailer…how can there be a secret that no one tells and yet no one is alive?!  Also, maybe it was the dark imaging from the VHS transfer but I really have no idea what the heck is going on in this movie.  But a quick run to IMDB tells me that teenagers (the bane of everyone’s existence) unleash an evil warlock (aren’t they all) that possesses a scarecrow and begins killing.  I won’t spoil his reasoning but if you have ever seen The Fog, you can guess who the victims might be.  This is another nostalgia trip for those who miss the 90s.

Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection

http://youtu.be/klgAiPle3-g

Back in 1968 when George Romero originally made the movie, it was called Night of the Flesh Eaters but changed the name to Night of the Living Dead a few weeks before release.  The problem was the distributor only had the copyright out for the original title and not the new title we have all come to know and love.  This means that Night of Living Dead is now public domain.  This leads to lots of problems including people like the makers of this movie who use the name as a draw despite the fact there is zero relation to the movie.  This version takes place in Wales and while a lot of what I read in regards to reviews point to a remake, the trailer appears to point to something not even close.  So I guess, view it with caution because a British shot-for-shot remake appears to not be in the cards.

That’s all for this week folks!  Hopefully you’ll take the time to look up some of the selections this week and be sure to let me know what you thought.  Don’t forget to hit the comments and let me know if I missed something or if there is a movie out there you think I should check out.  Also, make sure you check out some of my friends on Nerditis while checking me out and I’ll see you next week!
