Weekly Time Waster

Welcome to another Weekly Time Waster!  My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies.  I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more I love it.  This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world.  I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie.  Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think I missed.

We have an interesting week in the new releases.  There really isn’t much in the way main stream releases to speak of so this is a chance for some of the sleeper movies featuring an old-looking Val Kilmer, a bizarre vampire love movie that is still better than Twilight, an exorcist themed movie that missed the recent wave of other themed movies and a disaster movie that would make Keanu Reeves proud.

Val Kilmer stars as a murder writer who stumbles into a small town and then takes it upon himself to solve the murder of a Jane Doe.  Now when I first saw this thing I thought, what the heck is this thing and what no name director is bringing us this direct to video gem…Francis Ford Coppolla?!? Sweet Jesus what happened to that guy? Why did he do this?  I will give him credit though because he has Bruce Dern in it so it can’t be that bad right?  Expect to see weird moments that are meant to be artsy but come across as drawing the movie out.  But hey, Dracula was a great movie right?

Okay, so this is a bit of cheat on my part because this is a repeat.  You know if you push the release date of your own direct to video movie then you are going to have a bad time.  But now I’ve had the benefit of second site and without reading what I said last time, let me tell you that if you are going to rip off the classic The Hunger (even the lame soft core porn TV series) you better make it original or something that makes it your own.  But I literally see nothing in it that makes this thing unique.  Sure I guess adding the sister to corrupt the new guy is something new but I can safely say that no one wanted this thing…even if it has been pushed from earlier this year.

Exorcist Chronicles

Where would you like me to begin?  First of all I guess this movie is about various exorcisms throughout the world.  But then what on earth is the deal with the ending with the Trojan warrior and the confused chick running around a field being chased.  Why on earth is it that the demon leaves the body it looks like the Doctor regenerating?  I have no idea who Reality entertainment is but I only hope that this movie is not the tent pole to the company.  I notice though that filming things in found footage style is apparently the cover for poor writing as everything sounds like it is being acted out by a group of adult education theatre students.

Redline

In a movie that is actually fairly timely when you think about it, a subway train crashes, for the record in one of the lamest and hilarious CGI ways possible.  Following the crash, we see the survivors try to escape the wreckage.  This one is filled with rip-offs from other disaster flicks so why don’t you play some cliché BINGO with me?  Loved one missing his family (check), crazed military/red neck guy (check), red herring Middle Eastern (check), heroine who probably shouldn’t be (check), old guy who thinks he knows everything (check) and that’s a BINGO!!!!  Frankly, this is a movie even the SyFy guys would say, “What the hell are you smoking?”

That’s all for this week folks!  Hope you enjoy some of the selections this week and be sure to let me know what you thought.  Don’t forget to hit the comments and let me know if I missed something or if there is a movie out there you think I should check out.  Also, make sure you check out some of my friends on Nerditis while checking me out and I’ll see you next week! Also, keep an eye out for new Tales from the Northside!
