Weekly Time Waster

Welcome to another Weekly Time Waster!  My name is Scott or Canadian Scott if you prefer and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies.  I love them all; sometimes the worse a movie is, the more I love it.  This weekly column is going to be bringing you some of the new release movies from the week relevant to us in the nerd world.  I won’t be giving you spoilers but instead you’ll get to see some trailers and my thoughts on the movie.  Enjoy and feel free to let me know of any others you think I missed.

What an interesting week for new releases.  We have an entire spectrum of movies available for you to look over covering the great aspects of bad movie rainbow.  We have a great support movie for troops suffering from PTSD, we ask if Beau Bridges is okay and needs money, if a horror magazine makes a film does that mean it should automatically be awesome and finally we ask nothing, I think we just let the last one asks the questions for you.

Black Rock

Three women who are life long friends go to a secluded island to get away from their troubles; clichés abound in just these three girls we have the girl getting over a loss or traumatic event, the unhappy housewife and the mousy girl who will awaken when she kills a guy.  These girls stumble across three guys who are also there to have a good time.  The two groups get together and after the unhappy housewife gets freaky with one of the dudes, bad stuff happens and the girls no need to rely on eachother to get through this by killing the guys (boy that escalated quickly).  What I find interesting about the three guys is that they are all returning soldiers from Afghanistan and suffer from PTSD.  Now without knowing that kind of first hand account, I doubt every soldier coming back is out to kill you.  But don’t take my word for it; Filmdrunk posted a guest review from a soldier about this movie which you can find here.

Two 20 somethings in love (which we know because they make out a lot in the movie at least according to trailers) are also pretty good con artists in so much as stealing a persons ID is considered “conning”.  When they discover that the girl is a dead ringer for an heiress to oil money, the two decide to take advantage of the situation and try to get the big score.  But nothing is really as it seems and using plot developments you have seen in countless con movies before the question will be if the couple stay together and keep the money (unknown spoiler but probably).  Beau Bridges is in this and apparently asked his brother how to do ornery southern sheriff because he devours scenery even in the two seconds he gets in this trailer.

The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh

Rue Morgue, not satisfied with owning the horror magazine market has decided to branch out with their first foray into movies.  Like every other horror movie released in the last couple years it would appear to be a religious questioning movie masked as a demon possession.  Expect faith to be tested, lost and regained.  Expect lame jump scares which Rue Morgue should know better don’t work on the refined horror palate.  Needless to say I do not have high hopes for this thing and I feel they may have overshot in their first trip out.  But hey! People love printed news still, right?

The Demented

Despite what I may have said in the opening, this is not some poor quality movie made by some unknown studio that had zero budget.  This Anchor Bay film looks like it was professionally done but the problem lies with the script (or the bar napkins that filled in for a script).  Let us take many ideas like conspiracy theories (chem trails), zombies (probably can only be killed with headshots), virus infected people (thank you 28 Days Later for ruining things) and mix them all up in a blender. My only question is if you were told to stay indoors and no one you know is infected, why travel out to a densely populated town to snoop about…maybe you should just leave things alone.

That’s all for this week folks!  Take the time to look up some of the selections this week and be sure to let me know what you thought.  Don’t forget to hit the comments and let me know if I missed something or if there is a movie out there you think I should check out.  Also, make sure you check out some of my friends on Nerditis and I’ll see you next week!  And make sure you keep your eyes open for the next Tales from the Northside!
