Weekly Time Waster

Welcome to another Weekly Time Waster!  My name is Canadian Scott and my area of nerd love comes from watching movies.  Sometimes the best movies to enjoy are not necessarily the one with the best production values or Oscar caliber script but instead the worst movies can be the best ones.  This weekly feature will bring you the best of the new releases in Blu-Ray, DVD and even streaming.  I won’t give away too many spoilers but instead will give you the trailer to the movie and my thoughts based on the trailer.

If I was to tell you this was a weak release week for movies that would be quite the understatement.  I have scoured everywhere to find you some decent things but it isn’t pretty.  In the mainstream releases, we have The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey extended cut.  We shouldn’t be surprised, this is Peter Jackson’s thing, releasing super long versions of Tolkein movies plus the second movie to The Hobbit is out in only a few weeks.  Secondly, if vampire movies that spawn terrible housewife fan fiction is your thing, well the entire Twilight Saga has received a complete set release including all the movies and bonus features to aid in numerous torture.

As for the best of the rest, I have a blue tinted movie set in Smarch, then we travel down the found footage road again but to make people even angrier it includes footage shot on camera phones, finally I have two really good box sets which I think would help eliminate some sci-fi fans from your Christmas list this year.

13/13/13

If you think back to the Treehouse of Horror countdown featured last week, one of my favourite segments was Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace.  In that segement, a rip of Nightmare on Elm Street, Marge talks about how the parents were meeting at the school “on the 13th day of the 13th month to discuss the misprinted calendars”, Homer called this additional month Smarch.  Well imagine if the calendar we have all come to know and love was actually wrong and there was a secret month added…are you with me still?  And let’s say that on the 13th day of this new month people went crazy 28 Days Later style?  Well then my friend you have specific taste.  I’m not really sure the writer thought everything through on this film and don’t ask me why everything is blue because I’m fairly certain that was probably by accident…or I hope.

Bell Witch Haunting

The Bell Witch has been a sticky subject amongst paranormal investigators throughout the years.  The story goes that early in the 1800s a family with the last name Bell was supposedly haunted by a witch that lived in the nearby woods.  The attacks involved weird noises, visits from bizarre hybrid creatures and possible possession.  Why investigators discuss this case to this day is a lot of what came out about this haunting was from a chronicler of the story only coming out long after the main people from the case were long since dead.  Anyway, what better time then to bring up the case with everyone’s favourite genre “found footage”!!  Basically we get a re-telling of the legend but with a modern spin and use of home videos and even the always great to watch camera films.  I know I love it when I watch a video and people don’t hold the camera the right way well imagine watching parts of a movie like this!  I can feel the blood boiling as we speak.  What kind of movie can you expect?  Well to me it looks like Blair Witch Project meets Paranormal Activity so don’t think of this as a rip off of those two movies because where do you think they got their inspiration from?

Farscape

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187636/

Farscape was an Australian creation that came out from 1999-2003.  The story is about an American astronaut who slips into a wormhole while orbiting Earth and ends up at the other side of the galaxy.  There he joins up with a rag tag group of criminals and basically has to fight multiple foes week to week.  This week, the entire series is released on Blu Ray and I think this is some under-rated sci-fi.  Not only was the story really well done but Jim Henson Studios were responsible for the creature design and puppetry.  And the make up effects rivaled a lot of sci-fi shows from the time.  What made the show great was the chemistry our American astronaut John Crichton has with the rest of the crew.  If you have someone who enjoys sci-fi adventures like Doctor Who or Stargate then this may be something they would enjoy.  I wish that the show would find its way back onto to TV but this box set would eliminate that need!

Doctor Who Series 1-7: The Complete Series

http://www.amazon.ca/Doctor-Who-Limited-Edition-Giftset-Blu-ray/dp/B00DYAE2IY

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the show Doctor Who.  BBC has released this boxed gift set which features all the episodes and specials for the Doctor’s 9-11.  If you are new to the series, Doctor Who is the story of the Doctor and his companions as they travel across time and space in his TARDIS.  Each week they face new challenges and see new and unusual sights.  Doctor Who can be an acquired taste but if you are looking for some great sci-fi action/adventure with British qualities and wit then you have found the mother load.  Featured in this set as well is a “sonic screwdriver” universal remote for that added piece of authenticity for your viewing pleasure.

That’s all for this week folks!  Take the time to look up some of the selections this week and be sure to let me know what you thought.  Don’t forget to hit the comments and let me know if I missed something or if there is a movie out there you think I should check out.  Make sure you check out some of my friends on Nerditis and keep your eyes peeled for The Northern Dead and old favourite Tales from the Northside!
