NBC’s Hannibal: Friendship is Horrific

NBC’s Hannibal returned to television last night.  I watched the first season and I am a fan of the show.  However I think some people miss the point of it sometimes.  Hannibal is a show about friendship.

Hannibal - Season 1

The show serves as a prequel to the book series by Thomas Harris about the cannibal serial killer Dr Hannibal Lecter.  The first season followed FBI profiler Will Graham as he worked with Dr Lecter on a number of serial murder cases.  All the while Will was unaware that Lecter was setting him up to take the fall for a number of murders that Hannibal himself had committed.  The second season begins with Will Graham behind bars convinced that Hannibal is the real killer but with no way to prove it yet.

Hannibal - Season 1

At one point in last night’s episode Hannibal Lecter calls Will Graham his friend.  Will replies that he and Hannibal are not friends.  However Will is wrong.  Throughout the first season they built a relationship.  This is what friendship looks like with a highly intelligent psychopath like Hannibal Lecter.  If they were not friends then Hannibal probably would have just killed and eaten Will by now.  But because Will Graham is his friend he just manipulates and frames him for multiple brutal homicides.  If Will wants to make any progress against Hannibal in the future then he needs to learn to take advantage of the fact that in Hannibal Lecter’s mind they are best friends.

Hannibal - Season 1

Anyway I should probably talk about some of the things that actually happened in the episode.  It starts with Jack Crawford and Hannibal Lecter having a fight to the death in the doctor’s kitchen.  It is awesome.  We see both characters completely cut loose and just trying to kill each other.  At one point it looks like Jack has the upper hand only to lose it.  We don’t get to see the final outcome of the fight before the screen goes dark with the words “12 weeks earlier”.  The new season has just started and already it has promised us that Jack Crawford will learn the truth about Hannibal but we will have to wait until the finale to see the final fight.

The rest of the episode involves a lot of people feeling guilty about contributing to Will Graham going insane and murdering people and Will still trying to piece together how Hannibal framed him.  Hannibal goes to work for the FBI on a bizarre new murder case that seems to involve using human bodies for art or something.  The most disturbing bit in this episode was when Will finally has a flash of lost memory recalling Hannibal forcing a plastic tube down his throat while he was barely conscious to force him to ingest a human ear.  The sounds alone that the tube makes as Hannibal forces it in are horrific.  This is what happens when you are friend with Hannibal Lecter.  But this revelation gives Will just the push he needed to solidify his resolve to take down Dr Lecter.  I can hardly wait to see how he convinces everyone of the truth and how Jack and Hannibal ended up fighting in that kitchen.
