The two-men indie outfit MVisioning Studio had recently took up to Kickstarter in search of fundings for their intriguing Monster Rancher-esque game, “Toby’s Island”. The game was billed as a “2D RPG adventure involving monster-raising, town-building, puzzles, classic turn based combat & exploration”, which sounds like a “happy happy sunny and smiles” romp akin to Animal Crossing. Well, if you disregard the dark undercurrent of the plot, that is.
The main character, Toby, is a boy locked in an abusive relationship with his father, and the only way he can escape the shithead that is daddy dearest is to travel to this island in his grandfather’s tales, which was supposed to be one filled with magical, tamable creatures and has been protected by his family for generations. Now, I don’t want theorize anything that might spoil the story, but if this game also took a page from “Papo y Yo”, then I know exactly where this is going.
The game is asking for twenty thousand Canadian dollars to get things rolling, and considering the dollar-to-monopoly money currency exchange rate isn’t all that high in difference, then you should totally start supporting this one. And in case that wasn’t enough, then how about this incentive for a bro: one half of the MVisioning Studio founder is named “Matt Beer”. Surely the owner of a BADASS name like THAT deserve nothing short of our love and support, right?
Matt Beer here… I LOVED your article haha, thanks for this, what a great read first thing in the morning 😀
