Comic Book Storytelling: Captain Marvel and the Trial of Jean Grey

Welcome back to Comic Book Storytelling everyone.  I am going to change up the format a bit.  Some comics will still get individual articles but from now on I am going to try to cover more than one thing at a time and I hope this will help me get these articles out to you on a more consistent schedule.  This week I will be looking at two things, The Trial of Jean Grey and Captain  Marvel #2.

The new Captain Marvel series continues and it is still pretty good.  It starts with the Captain in space on a new spaceship transporting the green alien girl in a space pod back out into outer space.  She also has her cat with her because it is so ornery no one would look after it while she was gone.  Anyway they get attacked by space pirates and the Guardians of the Galaxy show up to help.  Rocket Raccoon then tries to kill Carol’s cat and the green alien girl wakes up and tries to kill Star Lord before stealing Captain Marvel’s space ship.  Also of note for some reason the issue starts with a ‘Two Weeks Ago’ mention but they never do a time jump so I assume that was an editing mistake.

Recently the All New X-Men had a crossover with Guardians of the Galaxy for The Trial of Jean Grey.  The Shi’ar decided to put the teenage Jean Grey from the past on trial for the crimes committed by her future Pheonix force possessed self.  The king of Spartax AKA Star Lord’s dad points out what a stupid idea this is but none of the other galactic leaders care enough to do anything about it.  The Guardian learn about this and go to Earth but arrive too late to prevent Jean from being abducted and so they team up with the young X-Men to save her.

Once again the best thing about the All New X-Men is just getting to see a version of the team not bogged down by all of their current emotional baggage.  Jean Grey and Cyclops shine ahead of the others again.  For the first time in a long time Jean and Scott are interesting characters I want to read about and their inner conflict over their relationship is great.  Also I find it interesting that I enjoy the Guardians of the Galaxy more when they are showing up in other peoples stories than their own title.

By the end of the trial Jean has been rescued and set free and gained some All New telekinetic powers that manifest as her turning into a floating pink glowing naked lady.  Then Cyclops decides to go out into space to spend time with his dad Corsair, leader of the Starjammers.  As much as I like to see him and Jean interact it will probably be better to have him out of the way for a bit to let the other members of the All New X-Men shine.
