Wizard World Chicago 2014 has begun and once again I, The Original DJRM, am there to cover it for you here on Nerditis.
First of all this year Wizard World is back in Hall A of the convention center. Last year the floor was split between two floors so the escalator was in constant use. This year it is still split but both showrooms are on the ground floor so you just have to walk across the lobby to get back and forth between them.
The first panel I attended was Women in Geek Culture. Our host talked about everything ranging from the fake geek girl meme to the vitriol that the gaming community has directed at Anita Sarkeesian. Overall this panel was okay but I have been to a lot of women focused social issues panels so I might be a little spoiled. It was still a decent presentation.
As usual I have a number of cosplay pictures to show you.
This man was hanging out with this Iron Man group for a long time taking pictures with people. Some people seemed to think he might actually be Stan Lee. But no, he was not the real Stan Lee. However they did later pose with the real Stan Lee for a picture.
Later in the day I attended the J. August Richards panel. The Angel and now Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor was very friendly. At one point someone in the audience pointed out that James Marsters and David Boreanaz are also attending this year and suggested they do an Angel reunion. J. August Richards then decided to tweet this live during the panel.
He was asked about whats coming up on Agents of SHIELD but could not say anything, either because there is no news yet or he is sworn to Marvel secrecy. Now that he gets to be a superhero he said his new goal is to get to be in one of the new Star Wars movies. This would be cool for a number of reasons. Already a few people of color are going to be in the new Star Wars cast. Richards talked about how Star Wars had such an effect on him when he was a kid. He also mentioned that growing up in a mostly white neighborhood when he and the other kids played Star Wars he always had to be Lando or if he was lucky Chewbacca. Social media gives fans a whole new power outlet so if anyone wants to see J. August Richards in one of the new Star Wars movies get the word out.
I will be heading out for another day at Wizard World Chicago soon. And tonight I will be covering the Costume Contest.
