Hannibal Gets Wrecked

It was Fourth of July weekend so this recap is coming to you a little late.  Hannibal got wrecked in this episode.  But before we get into that lets talk about what the other characters were doing.

Will Graham and Chiyoh are on a train traveling to Florence to look for Hannibal.  They spend a lot of time in the dark talking about how Hannibal affected them and it is by far the least interesting part of the episode.  Chiyoh indicates that while Hannibal influenced her life he did not change her the way he changed Will.  Towards the end of the episode they go out to the caboose and Chiyoh makes a comment about different kinds of manipulation.  Then she starts to make out with Will before THROWING HIM OFF THE TRAIN.  Okay I was not expecting that.  It seems that Chiyoh has decided her and Will’s goals regarding Hannibal are not compatible and now she has stranded him in the middle of nowhere.  When Will regains consciousness he has a vision of the creepy black stag that used to represent Hannibal in his subconscious.  So Will’s part of the episode ends with him wandering through the night of some unknown bit of European countryside.

Meanwhile Jack Crawford is hanging out with Inspector Pazzi who still wants Jack to help him bring Hannibal to justice.  Hannibal receives a visit from the Inspector and neither man gives away that they recognize each other from 20 years ago.  Hannibal questions Pazzi about his family history and this becomes much more relevant later.  Pazzi could probably expose Hannibal with a proper investigation but instead gets tempted by the bounty being offered by Mason Verger.  Alana Bloom was able to figure out what part of Italy Hannibal is in based on his grocery bill.  Bedelia has been buying expensive wine and truffles for Hannibal on a regular schedule.  When Pazzi calls in to collect the bounty Mason Verger asks for a fingerprint to confirm Hannibal’s identity.  Alana Bloom points out that this will probably get Pazzi killed and of course Mason Verger just shrugs it off.

Pazzi returns to the museum in the evening to see Hannibal and they have a really weird game of show and tell.  Pazzi brought a family heirloom, a face torture mask that was used on one of his ancestors.  Hannibal then shows the Inspector an engraving of one of the Pazzi ancestors being hanged and disemboweled.  Pazzi tries to discreetly grab a knife with Hannibal’s fingerprint and a moment later he is unconscious.  When he wakes up Hannibal has him bound and gagged and getting a noose ready.  Pazzi gets a call from Alana Bloom trying to warn him his life is in danger.  It looks like Alana is not as on board with Mason Verger’s revenge plan as it seemed or maybe letting a man die to draw out Hannibal is just a step too far for her.  Hannibal answers the phone and exchanges a few words with Alana before hanging up.  Then its out the window for Pazzi as Hannibal reenacts the hanging/disemboweling from earlier.  So Inspector Pazzi is dead.

Hannibal looks out the window to admire his work when he sees none other than Jack Crawford looking back up at him.  And so begins the best part of the episode.  Hannibal scrambles back to his office where Jack is waiting for him.  For once Hannibal is caught off guard and Jack begins by throwing Dr. Lecter through a display case.  Jack goes on to make use of the various torture devices Hannibal has been curating to totally wreck his shit.  Jack has been through hell because of Hannibal and now it is time to repay him for it.  Hannibal gets in a few good punches but for the most part Jack dominates the fight.  Hannibal’s usual talent for manipulative taunting falls flat against the wall of Jack Crawford’s fury.  To finish him off Jack decides to throw Hannibal out the window he just used to kill Pazzi, this proves to be a mistake.  Hannibal is able to grab onto the hanging Pazzi and soften his fall just enough to walk away after hitting the ground.

So what will Hannibal do now?  Jack witnessed him murdering Pazzi.  Hannibal and Bedelia’s false identities will be compromised now.  Do they have a back up plan?  How are the Italian authorities going to react to all of this?  And now that Chiyoh has ditched Will what is she up to?  We’ll see what happens next week.
