Welcome to Your Daily Nerd Thing. Today we continue out Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared spotlight with episode three. In this episode Yellow Guy meets a butterfly who takes him on a journey to learn about love.
It starts with the characters having a picnic. A chicken picnic. Where all of the chicken is raw. Anyway Yellow Guy is enchanted by a little cartoon butterfly until Duck Guy swats it thinking its a bee. Yellow Guy is upset and goes off by himself where he meets a different butterfly who sings to him about love and takes him to join a cult that worships a giant stone head that eats gravel. At one point Red Guy and Duck Guy see Yellow Guy being flown off but decide to stay and eat their chicken before doing anything about it.
At some point in a series like this the audience begins to expect things to take a turn at some point and this episode seems more prepared for that. It slowly eases you into the reveal that Yellow Guy is being brainwashed by a cult of cute animals. However at the end it seems it did not take because Yellow Guy wakes up in the tree he was sitting in earlier as if all that came before was just a dream. Red Guy and Duck Guy are waiting for him. They apologize for upsetting him and offer him the last boiled egg from the picnic. A bloody caterpillar creature emerges from the egg calling Yellow Guy father before being crushed by Duck Guy who apparently can’t tell the difference between a bee and other insects.
There is a lot of potential symbolism to be unlocked in any episode of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. This episode seems to be about how sad and lonely Yellow Guy’s life is and how there is nothing for him beyond the show. Red Guy and Duck Guy may be insensitive but at least they will be there for Yellow Guy in the end and will never ask him to feed gravel to a giant stone head named Malcolm.
