Welcome to Your Daily Nerd Thing. It is patch day for World of Warcraft and a big one is coming in. Patch 7.3.5 is bringing with it a new leveling system to the game. There will be other stuff in the patch the Sword of Sargeras in Silithus and Ulduar timewalking. But this new level scaling is the one that concerns players like me.
I have been playing World of Warcraft for a long time. And I don’t just play one class. I don’t even just play one of each class. I want to level one of every class spec. And thus I have a lot of alternate characters besides my main. Leveling a single character was a long and slow process in the early days and even during the first few expansions. It was during Wrath of the Lich King that I finally figured out a system of leveling a character that really worked for me. I knew what zones and what quest chain I liked to do and which ones I wanted to avoid. I was on track to finally get a few of those alts to higher levels. Then Cataclysm happened.
With the Cataclysm expansion the whole world changed. The Quest storylines in every zone were redone in many cases so that the zones actually had stories now. But it was also new and different and I did not know what I did and did not like anymore. I tried to press on but found several zones had one horribly bugged quest or that some still had gathering quests with ridiculously crap drop rates for items. That ruined the momentum I had once had for leveling. Eventually I once again figured out what things worked for me and started getting characters leveled again.
Now the leveling system itself is changing. This looks good in some ways because I can go back and finish quest lines I like that I usually end up out-leveling too fast. But now we will be able to start expansion content a lot earlier. There is a good chance I am going to start skipping over a lot of Outland content and going straight to Northrend, or skipping over Cataclysm to get to Pandaria. Draenor looks like it will be the same for the most part but I like a lot of the zone stories there.
